”After my previous releases as StillStand and the "Heimat" set from
beginning of 2001, "Symbiosen" is a new approach to abstract ambient
music. StillStand is still strictly synthetically music, atmospheres
are created and not imitated - but with "Symbiosen" new aspects
are included in the sound. While before sounds were the most important medium
and rhythm and melody were secondary, now all three aspects get their share
of influence in the tracks. There are beats and loops, melodic repeating lines
and spherical parts, all colliding inside of the tracks. This is the concept
of "Symbiosen": Using the methods of my project Monoid, rhythm and
distortion to influence the sound of StillStand and to increase the range
of possibilities. "Symbiosen" was recorded right after "Heimat",
where Monoid and Conscientia Peccati (my third project) have been transformed
to fit into an ambient concept - and I found it most interesting how the sound
of Monoid and the concept of StillStand worked together. Now, after trying
to bring this concept further into a melting of ambient and industrial sounds,
I think "Symbiosen" is more accessible then the previous StillStand
releases as there is more activity, more movement. Calling the result "Symbiosen"
(symbioses) made sense as this is truly what it is all about.Similar projects
dealing with melting of my other projects are planned for the future.” (Martin Steinebach, July 2001)

Nice
packaging for this first release on the german label Tosom, with the CD coming
between two thick layers of black and red foam (the kind of item you can drop
to the floor without being afraid of breaking it). I was a bit surprised of
seeing a new album by Stillstand being released on a german label, actually,
since Martin Steinebach seemed to be used to working with American noise labels
(Fusion Audio or Troniks). But, after listening to this CD, one might think
that this could not really have fit on labels releasing harsher or darker
kind of noise, "Symbiosis" showing a melodic and softer new direction. On
the 7 tracks of this full length CDR, Martin Steinebach uses the core elements
of his calm and drony project, but adds to it other more accessible elements,
like synthetic and long melodies, that are played on top of a very strange,
muffled assemblage of drones and echoed percussions. Not that ambient anymore,
"Symbiosis" is however a very strange album, that sounds more like one long
work that various tracks. This album doesn't have such a deep feeling as the
"Ordnung" one or the "Heimat" boxset, but is also more direct, dealing with
less drones and loops. Changes are more sudden, even though all the sounds
are soft. The paradox of this album is that the melodies and the calm rhythmic
patterns to be heard on most of the tracks are accessible, but, on the other
hand, the general mood of the CD is rather experimental, weird, and requiring
some kind of active listening. In way, this sounds like music put to sleep,
and is very mind numbing. A weird experimental combination of sad and isolationist
lines and of small noises and drones, "Symbiosis" didn't appeal to me at first
as much as ”Ordnung” did. This is an album that reveals itself slowly, and
that you can really enjoy once you have accepted to put together such different
elements as deep droning basses and simples synthetic melodies. Anyway, Martin
Steinebach is not a beginner, and the album stays always pleasant, in all
its strange dream-like weirdness.
Na
so was.
Schaumstoff-Pack. Auch das vorzügliche Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis haben wir
schon lieb gewonnen: 70 Minuten durchdachter, ambitionierter Ambient.

Martin
